As a tourist, you might decide to visit Iran to ascend the highest volcano in Asia(Damavand), explore the Lut Desert or visit Iran holy shrines in a spiritual religious trip! Also, you might travel to Iran for business purposes or even to benefit from the best and cheapest medical services in the entire Middle East. Either way, the good news is getting Iran visa is much easier than you may think but it’s highly important to note that you must choose your Iran visa type based on nature and purpose of your trip. How to Get Iran Tourist Visa
To get Iran tourist visa there are some common ways which you can choose either of them based on your timetable, or your experience with the Iran Embassy. The Iran visa application methods in order of preference and easiness are as below:
- Applying through a Local Iranian travel agency:
- Applying from Iran Embassy
- Applying through Iran E-visa website by yourself
The detailed instructions for each method are as follows:
Online registration of Iran E-Visa application by yourself1.
Iran visa application should be registered online. You must apply through the Iran Ministry of Foreign Affairs website and upload the required documents. After at least 2 working days (Which can also takes up to 2 weeks depending of MFA’s decision), if your application is accepted by the ministry, you will receive a Reference Code. Receiving this code means that, your visa has been issued successfully.
In your visa form you can choose where you want to collect your visa: One of the Iran Embassies (or consulates) or at the airport. You can choose from the list of Iran Embassies and Consulates or you can collect your visa at the airport if you are traveling to Iran by flight. Please note that having the Reference code is not enough and you must bring the printed visa paper with you as well. Although this method sound very easy but it has some risks as well. The chance of rejection is always higher because your documents may have some small errors that can dismiss the application.
2. Going to the Iranian Embassy in Person
If there is an Iranian Embassy or consulate in your city or country then you can apply for your Iran visa in person. You must submit some required documents there that we will explain later. After registering your request and submitting the documents, you will be asked to come to the office after a couple of days again and collect your visa if your application is accepted. This is the outdated way of getting Iran visa and no one really do it anymore because obviously there are easier ways to get Iran visa. Also following up your visa application status is much harder. Another reason for not applying your Iran visa this way is that in case there is no Iran embassy where you live, you must post your documents to the embassy which makes the procedure longer!
3. Applying for Iran Tourist Visa via Trip to Persia Travel Agency
If you do not want to get involved in the various time-consuming steps of obtaining an Iran tourist visa, you can do the whole process through the Trip to Persia travel agency. The steps are as follows:
- You will be contacted by Trip to Persia’s Visa specialists
- Your Visa request will be sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the Trip to Persia agency
- Trip to Persia will send you your Reference Code
- You will collect your visa in your preferred Iran Embassy or Airport
4. Getting Iran Visa on Arrival
Iran visa on arrival is a particular visa service that can be obtained for passport holders from most countries.
In this case, all you have to do is take an international flight to one of the airports in Iran and apply for a visa at the same airport. Although this may seem simple, it can be risky as well. Because you may face visa rejection, which results in disrupting your travel plans and, of course, losing a lot of money you spent for bookings. Besides at the time of your arrival which is normally early in the morning you will have to spend a couple of hours on filling out different forms, buying travel insurance and money payments. This probably isn’t what you want to do while you are just off the plane from a long flight. It should be noted that right now getting Iran Visa on Arrival (VOA) is not possible due to the pandemic till further notice and you must apply for your Iran visa before your arrival.
Moreover, American, Canadian, and British citizens can not apply for this visa and must only apply for their Iran visa through local travel agencies in Iran. Trip to Persia will apply for visas of the citizens of these 3 countries free of charge. Also, citizens of Iraq, Pakistan, Colombia, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Kenya, and Somalia cannot get Visa on Arrival in Iran airports and must follow the instructions number 1, 2 or 3 mentioned above.

Passport holders that can travel to Iran visa-free
Citizens of most countries need visas to enter Iran but there are some countries that don’t need visa due to certain political and cultural agreements between the governments.
If you are a passport holder from Armenia (90 days), Azerbaijan (14 days), Georgia (45 days), Syria (90 days), Turkey (90 days), Venezuela (15 days), Lebanon (29 days) or Oman (90 days) then you are in luck because you can travel to Iran without visa. All you need is your valid passport. Please keep in mind that before visiting Iran you must not have traveled to Israel or if you did, you must wait at least 1 year and then travel to Iran.
Citizens of visa-free countries can stay 30 days in Iran and this duration cannot be extended. If you need to stay more days in Iran then you must leave Iran from air or land borders and enter again to stay another 30 days.
In the current situation due to the pandemic, citizens of free visa countries must be fully vaccinated and bring the certificate of their full vaccination confirming complete vaccination at least 15 days prior to arrival in Iran and also negative PCR test received no later than 96 hours before arrival in Iran.
Citizens of other countries need visas to enter Iran. The procedure for all of them is the same and only the visa fee is different.
Iran Tourist Visa for American, Canadian and British citizens
American, Canadian and British citizens cannot travel to Iran on their own. According to Iran’s government instructions, they must travel to Iran only in form of organized tours. By organized tour, we mean a guaranteed tour package bought from local Iranian travel agencies which indicate a detailed travel plan, sightseeing programs and overnight stays accompanied by a professional licensed tour guide throughout the trip. Needless to say, these citizens must only apply for their Iran tourist visa through local Iranian travel agencies.
The visa procedure for American, Canadian, and British citizens is a little bit different. You just need to be more patient because your visa procedure and checking your documents will take longer.
Trump Travel Bann
Issuing Iran Tourist visa on a separate piece of paper to reduce the concerns about Trump Travel Ban
Does Iran visa affect any future applications for Schengen, UK & US visas? Can I travel to the USA after visiting Iran?
On September 2017, Trump who was the president of the United States of America at the time enacted a Travel ban on people who have traveled to Iran, Syria, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, or Yemen. This ban put strong limitations on their entry to United States. Therefore many tourists who were planning on visiting Iran were concerned about the restrictions and following consequences of their trip to Iran. They were worried that they may face problems for getting Schengen or even an England visa.
This prompted the Iranian government to seek a solution for this problem. Since 2018, in response to this strict embargo, Iran officially announced that the passports of people traveling to Iran will not be stamped. The visa and entry/exit information will be recorded on a separate piece of paper. This will allow travelers to plan their Iran trip with ease of mind. Please note that you don’t need to make a separate application to ensure that your entry to Iran is not included in your passport. Right now, all Iran visas are issued on separate sheets.
This applies to those who apply for a visa beforehand and those who intend to get an Iran airport visa.
